A Torrential Intensity
Arturo Toscanini was one of history's greatest conductors. His prodigious talent, aided by an overwhelming intensity in rehearsal and performance, and fierce dedication, combined with the magnetic personality of a dictator, were the driving factors in establishing a career that dominated the music world, and especially Italian opera, for generations.
The final part of his career coincided with recording, radio, and even television coming to the fore, securing him a searing legacy. Peter Rosen, who also gave us documentaries on Enrico Caruso, Van Cliburn, Jascha Heifetz, Artur Rubinstein, etc, was director of this excellent "Toscanini--the Maestro," first seen on Bravo in 1985, then televised by PBS in 1988.
Here, RCA appropriately claims it as its own on DVD. It was written by Harvey Sachs, Walfredo Toscanini (grandson of the conductor) was Advisor, Martin Bookspan was Co-Producer, the Narrator was Alexander Scourby, and it was hosted by James Levine...
